Tuning into energy: from the coffee machine to inner balance

Energy is everywhere. It lights our homes, powers our devices, fuels our bodies, and—more subtly—supports our emotional and spiritual wellbeing. It’s the heartbeat of our planet and the quiet force within us that helps us feel centred, calm, and connected.

This blog will explore different types of energy—physical, environmental, and spiritual—with a focus on how tuning into your inner energy can support a more balanced, healthier life.

Physical Energy: The power behind daily life

When we think of energy, our minds often go to the sources that power the modern world—like fossil fuels, solar panels, and wind turbines. These are forms of physical energy, and they’re essential to how we live and interact with our environment.

Fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas have long been cornerstones of industrial progress. But they also come with environmental consequences, making sustainability an increasingly important part of the conversation.

Then there are the natural forces that shape our world:

  • Solar energy, which warms the Earth, fuels the climate, and drives the water cycle.

  • Gravitational energy, which keeps rivers flowing and our feet planted firmly on the ground.

  • Photosynthesis, where plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into the food chain’s foundation.

Humans, too, are part of this energy cycle. We consume food—carbohydrates, proteins, fats—to generate the energy we need for everything from cellular repair to regulating body temperature. Even when we’re resting, our bodies are at work using energy to maintain essential functions.

But we’re more than just physical systems. We’re energetic beings too.

Spiritual Energy: The subtle force within

While physical energy powers our bodies, spiritual energy supports our wellbeing in deeper, often less visible ways. Many traditions describe this energy in different terms:

  • Qi (China)

  • Prana (India)

  • Ki (Japan)

Whatever the name, the idea is the same: when this inner energy flows freely, we feel well—physically, emotionally, and mentally. When it’s blocked or depleted, we may feel stressed, tired, or out of sync.

Practices like Reiki, a Japanese healing technique, work with this idea. A Reiki practitioner gently channels energy through their hands, aiming to clear blockages and encourage the body’s natural healing response. Many people turn to Reiki to manage stress, ease physical discomfort, or support emotional clarity. Having recently been initiated into the practice, I can confirm that Reiki is a very powerful tool, creating a sense of calm within myself.

Practices to restore and balance energy

You don’t need to be an expert—or even particularly spiritual—to benefit from practices that restore balance to your energy. Here are a few simple ways to reconnect:

  • Meditation & breathwork
These help calm the nervous system and regulate internal energy. Even a few mindful breaths can shift how you feel.

  • Chakra alignment
Originating from ancient Hindu traditions, chakras are energy centres in the body. When balanced, they support physical and emotional health.

  • Reflexology
This practice stimulates points on the feet or hands, that correspond to different areas of the body, supporting energy flow and relaxation.

  • Sound healing & vibrational therapy
Sound can have a profound effect on our state of mind. I recently attended a sound bath at Kew Gardens by Ancient Sacred Sounds, and the experience was deeply calming. The vibrations from the instruments helped quiet my thoughts and left me feeling grounded. These frequencies are thought to activate the body’s relaxation response, reducing heart rate, easing tension, and restoring a sense of inner peace.

Balancing external and internal energy

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel depleted—both in terms of personal vitality and our planet’s resources. That’s why finding balance is more important than ever.

Here are a few gentle reminders for maintaining equilibrium:

  1. Be energy conscious
Support sustainable energy choices, reduce waste where you can, and stay mindful of how you consume resources.

  2. Recharge yourself
Just like we charge our phones, we need to restore ourselves through rest, reflection, and practices that nourish our inner world.

  3. Stay present
Whether you’re managing physical energy or tending to emotional well-being, awareness is the first step toward balance.

Living in harmony

Energy isn’t just something external that powers machines—it’s something deeply connected to how we live and feel. By learning to care for both the energy around us and the energy within us, we can live more harmoniously. Not only with the Earth, but with ourselves.

So—how do you nurture your own energy?
